Seed Library in Your City

Who

The Seed Library Program is operated by a partnerships between cities and Garden Pool, an international public charity for changing the food system.

What

  • The Seed Library will utilize a repurposed card catalog to house edible plant and herb seeds.
  • Library patrons will be able to check out seed packets with no Due Date or other obligations. They are however, encouraged to donate their harvested seeds back to the library/Garden Pool.
  • Garden Pool has 4 seed libraries at Mesa Public Library, AZ, Tempe Public Library, AZ, Mesa Main Library-Red Mountain, and  Huntington Beach Public Library, CA.  More locations will be opening soon.
  • Seed Library users will be encouraged to get their questions answered about planting and harvesting from Garden Pool web tutorials and through contacting Garden Pool directly.
  • Garden Pool will be provide a poster showing planting and harvesting seasons.
  • Lastly, Garden Pool will be supplementing the Seed Library with regular (quarterly) educational public programs and series’.

When

The Seed Library Program can be rolled out in about 3 months from date of commitment.

Where

The Seed Library Program is unique because it is not location specific.  Our template for starting an initiative in your city has been carefully mapped out so that the geographic location of the program does not alter the schedule nor quality of completion.

Why

  • Garden Pool’s Seed Library has proved successful at other locations.
  • Seed Libraries are an emerging trend in a more ecological and health conscious world.
  • The Seed Library may bring new community members into the library.
  • The Seed Library compliments City Council Priorities.
  • The Seed Library complements the Library’s Mission Statement in that it is both enriching the lives of community members by providing them with a free service that sustains and provides for them indefinitely; and engaging TPL patrons with new programs and life skills.
